Toddler skin is incredible. It’s soft, squishy, and basically perfect. But it's also way more sensitive than adult skin, which means summer comes with a whole new set of considerations. Too much sun, too much heat, too much splashing in chlorine, and suddenly you're dealing with a cranky, red-cheeked toddler who won't let you touch them.
Good news: summer skincare for toddlers doesn't have to be complicated. Here's what you genuinely need to know.
Sunscreen First, Always
If there's one non-negotiable in your toddler's summer routine, it's sunscreen. Toddlers have thin, delicate skin that burns faster than you'd expect, even on cloudy days.
A few things to look for:
- Mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) is generally recommended for young kids. It sits on top of the skin rather than absorbing into it, which makes it gentler for sensitive skin.
- SPF 30 or higher is the baseline. SPF 50 is a solid choice for full beach days or long outdoor play.
- Water-resistant formulas matter if your toddler is in and out of water or sweating a lot (which, let's be honest, they always are).
- We LOVE the sunscreen from Toddle. Our team uses it on their kids (and some even on themselves!)
Apply 15–20 minutes before heading outside, reapply every two hours, and don't forget the ears, back of the neck, and tops of feet. Those spots always get missed.
What About Moisturizer?
Heat and sun can dry out skin faster than you'd think, especially for toddlers who tend to sweat and then air-dry repeatedly throughout the day. A light, fragrance-free moisturizer applied after bath time helps keep their skin barrier happy. Toddle has a great product here, too!
If your toddler has eczema or extra-sensitive skin, summer can be a tricky season. Chlorine, sweat, and sun exposure can all be triggers. Rinse off after pool time and pat (don't rub) dry before applying any creams or ointments.
After-Sun Care: Don't Skip It
Even with great sunscreen habits, sun exposure adds up over a long summer day. A gentle, fragrance-free after-sun lotion or aloe vera gel (pure, no alcohol) can soothe pink or warm skin after a big outdoor day.
Keep it in the fridge for an extra-soothing moment at bedtime. Toddlers tend to think cold lotion is either the best or worst thing that's ever happened to them. Either way, it works.
What to Skip
- Adult sunscreens — Many contain fragrances or chemical filters that are too harsh for young skin.
- Anything with oxybenzone — This chemical filter is a common irritant for sensitive skin and is best avoided for young kids.
- Spray sunscreens on the face — Sprays are convenient for bodies, but apply to your hands first and then rub onto their face to avoid inhalation.
- Scented lotions and products — Fragrance is one of the most common skin irritants. When in doubt, go fragrance-free.
The Bottom Line
Keep it simple. A good mineral sunscreen, a gentle moisturizer, and a quick after-sun routine are genuinely all you need to keep your toddler's skin comfortable and protected all summer long.
